This sensor technology will record and analyze small and moderate quakes, which occur quite often, to detect the unique risk profile of your building.

HOW ELSE DOES THIS DEVICE HELP BEYOND EARTHQUAKE RISK MITIGATION?

Uneven foundation settling can happen even if there is never an earthquake, and this sinking can damage your home. Our device monitors your home as the foundation settles over time.

Common causes of uneven foundation settling:

  • Tree roots from one side of the house draw moisture from the ground. Soils with different moisture levels have different strengths, this difference in soil strength causes uneven foundation settling.
  • Sunlight and landscaping transform soil moisture composition around your home.
  • Plumbing leaks change the moisture composition on only one side of a house.
  • Inadequate column support

This gradual change over time leads to “Uneven Settling”.

 

Sign of uneven settlings are:

  • Cracks in brick, drywall, tile, and stucco
  • Windows and doors that jam overtime
  • Sloped, bouncy, sagging floors

Risks and challenges

The feasibility of low-cost seismic network using the Internet, cloud-connected sensors, and mobile technology has been proven by the Zizmos team (published academic papers, lab testing of sensors, and field trial in Northern CA). There is limited technical and scientific risk related to this Kickstarter project.

It is important to set proper expectations about the current scope of earthquake early warning systems. Such systems can give you as much as one minute of early warning; please do not expect a day or an hour of warning from this technology. Such technology does not exist at the time.

Regarding other benefits (monitoring building-specific risk and uneven sinking of your home), there is no technical risk that we can identify.

The greatest challenge we face is network sensor density. More sensors on the network increases the efficacy of the early warning service. If there are not enough sensors covering a given geographic area, early warning alerts may not be possible. This is why we need as many supporters as possible. Whatever the coverage in a specific are each backer will receive the benefits of knowing their building specific-risk and whether foundation-settling is unbalanced over time.

Our sensor technology has proven successful at detecting and recording earthquakes as small as magnitude 2.0. Smaller events may not be readily detected and recorded, but such events are rarely felt by humans and pose no risk to your home or building. Our sensor’s ability to detect and record an earthquake is a function of the distance between the sensor and the earthquake epicenter.

Data connectivity of this sensor unit is done over WiFi only. We assume your home or building has WiFi. We use little small bandwidth, so our sensor should not significantly affect your internet speed or capacity.

This sensor unit uses standard USB for a constant power supply. The unit being supported with this Kickstarter does not include battery power. An earthquake early warning will be delivered before strong shaking hitting your home, well before your home reaches a state of power loss. If, by chance, you are experiencing a power or WiFi outage and an earthquake happens, we cannot deliver an early warning notification to your sensor.

The sensor configuration system supports only iOS and Android.

Zizmos relies on specific suppliers of parts to build our sensor units; our production timeline may be delayed a few months if our suppliers experience a shortage.
